Hillary Clinton: sidelined by stomach virus

The normally indefatigable, globe-trotting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was Wednesday still laid low by a nasty stomach bug which has kept her out of the public eye since the weekend.

As the rumor mill kept up steam over whether she plans to run for president in 2016, the usually tireless Clinton remained out of sight after falling sick at the end of a tour of Europe.

“The secretary’s been really very ill. I mean, very. This stomach virus is a pretty vicious one,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

But she hastily clarified that the popular top US diplomat was not suffering from any life-threatening illness.

Clinton arrived back from a trip to Europe late Friday, but was forced to cancel a planned visit to Morocco this week for a key Friends of Syria meeting when she fell ill.

Since taking up her post almost four years ago, Clinton has kept up a relentless pace, visiting some 112 countries and on track to rack up a million miles on the job, making her the most traveled secretary of state ever.

Plot to Murder and Castrate Justin Beiber Foiled

Investigators have thwarted a convicted murderer's plot to kill and castrate teen idol Justin Bieber, Albuquerque's KRQE news reports.

According to the site, Dana Martin -- currently serving two life sentences in New Mexico for raping and killing a 15-year-old girl in Vermont 12 years ago -- recruited a fellow inmate at the state prison near Las Cruces to help him carry out a series of murders, one of which was planned for the "Beauty and the Beat" singer.

Law-enforcement officials say recently released inmate Mark Staake and his nephew Tanner Ruane were supposed to take down the pop sensation at his sold-out Madison Square Garden concert in New York City in November. The plan was to strangle the young star and his bodyguard with paisley ties, Martin's calling card, and then castrate both victims

Before the grisly deed was carried out, however, Staake was arrested in Vermont on outstanding warrants.

Apparently, Martin -- who KRQE says is "obsessed" with Bieber and has a tattoo of the singer on his leg -- blew the whistle on his own scheme and revealed the whole murder plot to cops. Investigators later recorded phone calls between Martin and Ruane in which the two discussed the killings.

Ruane was subsequently apprehended by New York police, who found murder tools and pruning shears on him at the time of his arrest.

Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, spoke to Us Weekly exclusively about the planned attack, noting that the singer's well-being was his team's top priority.
"We take every precaution to protect and insure the safety of Justin and his fans," Braun told Us.

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's Dinner Date Do-Over.Are they getting back together? 

 

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez appear to be giving it the old-school try.

A night after they were spotted arm-in-arm at an American Music Awards afterparty, the possibly reconciled duo ate at a Benihana in Encino, Calif.

They were with a group, mind you. But...still.

Unlike Friday night when they left an Encino sushi restaurant separately but equally agitated, Bieber and Gomez were careful not to be photographed together on their way in and out of the teppanyaki palace.

Tonight, Gomez held her hand in front of her face as the paparazzi took aim, while Bieber, who arrived in athletic shorts after a workout at an Equinox gym but left in black pants, walked to his car surrounded by an all-male entourage.

Gomez paid a visit to her doctor earlier today to get her throat checked out, a precautionary measure to make sure she hadn't caught bronchitis from her stepdad.

As Bieber and his mom, Canadian author Pattie Mallette, posed for photos on the red carpet at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, he even gave her a sweet smooch on the cheek.

Even cuter: When he won his award for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist, he dragged her along with him up on stage. "This is my mom," he said. "She's little but she's beautiful and thank you so much," he added, while turned toward her.

"I just wanna thank you for always believing in me," he told her.
